The idiomatic expression, “Made out of whole cloth,” signifies that a statement of fact is entirely false or fabricated. It commonly relates to an attempt to trick or deceive. In the 1800s, it was a common practice among tailors to deceive their customers, using pieced goods instead of whole cloth.
To exploit the metaphor, we would thematically declare that the “fabrication” of the truth by the current Presidential Administration “looms” large, if not universally, in its quotidian pronouncements. The perverse promotion by Donald Trump of the concept of “alternate facts” effectively disables any rational choice of empirical reality by its irrational, self-serving imposition of the unthinking responsibility to accept his articulated, self-interested distortions, i.e., those “manufactured from whole cloth.” Included among the overflowing dumpster of his misleading assertions of fact and intention, asserted tactically, or by reason of his delusional capability. The latter inclination, presumably, is what engendered sufficient votes from the Nation’s large inventory of poorly informed populist voters to secure his bizarre ( 1.5%) election victory.
Typical Trump assurances and undertakings, cut from the proverbial “whole cloth,” were: ” I will end the Ukraine and Gaza Wars in the first days of my office, I will immediately improve the Nation’s economy, cut its defifit and lower consumer prices, I will solve the immigration problem, I will preserve Medicaid and Medicare, as well as the Social Security System, I will lower crime and make America safer, I will cut taxes on the working class, together with various additional false or delusional representations consistent with his neurotic need to be a “Winner.”
If false representation can be permissibly analogized to the empirically judgmental concept of “whole cloth,” it may be observed that the totality of said demagogic representations of intention may be qualitatively described as abounding in ragged tatters. The current Nation’s economy is fathoms deep in economic and financial distress, its National deficit under Trump’s watch is excessive and unparalleled, the autocratic excess in his un-American, Gestapo style policy regarding the yet unmitigated immigration problem has not only proven to be observably unsuccessful, but has shamefully challenged America’s traditionally just system of legal due process, the Trump dominated legislature is in the process of hobbling Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare, crime statistics, notably, violent crimes are breaking the charts and Trump’s egotistically reductive ignorance has led to international policies that confuse and preturb our relations with friendly nations and NATO, and place the American Nation in an ambiguously dangerous posture, an unprecedented position quite distinguishable from the orange demagogue’s promises of a better and greater America. The Trump Administration appears to be contextually closer to the colorful reputational zeitgeist of New York City’s Garment Center than that of the traditionally American Democratic Republic.
There presently exists a clear and present danger that our Nation will run painfully short of the specific natural resources relative to its nuanced inventory of dry goods, known as “whole cloth.”
